Birds are chirping outside, and the hallways are empty, devoid of students at the moment. The sun is warm from where it streams through the windows, lighting the way.
Minato takes belabored steps up the stairs, one at a time, his hand on the wall so that he doesn't topple over. His vision swims as he reaches the last flight, and for a moment he pauses. It's only one more flight of stairs, but it feels almost insurmountable--he can only barely feel the tips of his fingers at this point, and his legs shake beneath him.
But at the same time... he knows that he'll make it. He promised, after all, and he doesn't break his promises.
Somehow, he does. One step at a time, he makes it, and he opens the door to the school rooftop and stumbles into the sunshine. A young woman is waiting there for him, and when she turns to look at him, she smiles, warm and loving. It's the sort of smile that makes him feel safe, and that he's no longer alone, and the warmth washes over him as his shoulders slump and he smiles back.
He takes a step towards her, forgetting for a moment the state he's in--but when he stumbles forward, she's suddenly there to catch him, and he relaxes into her arms, knowing that Aigis would never let him fall. He's made it to where he promised he'd be, and he's not alone, and the sunshine is warm. His friends... will surely remember their promise soon enough too. He's looking forward to seeing them again.
Can he really ask for much more than that?

Why... is he on the ground...?
It comes back to him in a flash--the squeal of tires, the overturning of the car, the way everything had gone red and then black--and then Minato's pushing himself up with a small gasp, gritting his teeth as he tries and fails to get to his feet.
There's the flicker of flames off to one side, hot and warm, and Minato slowly manages to shift that way--though his eyes widen immediately when he does, a short gasp escaping him. The car is on fire, overturned on its side. There's an arm hanging out of one side (his father?) unmoving, and right in front of him is his mother's broken form, her head hanging low, blood trickling from her lips.
She's alive, though--she's alive when she lifts her head and sees him there, and there's a rush of emotions, a sharp stab to his heart (fear, pain, worry, horror) when she smiles at him, lips forming a single word before the flames from the car swallow her form too.
