It was a long time ago, so I've had a long time to come to terms with it. Besides...

I ended up finding a home in the end, so I'm satisfied. I guess the calmness is just me, though. [Or, you know, Death in his head. But. Details.]

... When I transferred schools on a scholarship, I ended up in these dorms... and I ended up becoming a family with everyone there. It was a pretty ragtag group, but...

[A shrug, quiet contentedness on his face.]

I'd never had anything like it before.

...Yeah, I get that. It's how I feel about John and Rose and Jade.

[ he misses the girls SO BAD. ]

Oh... yeah, that makes sense.

[Even just from what he's seen from Dave and John...]

I definitely get that sense from you guys. So that's just... me, right there in a nutshell. [Congrats, Dave, now you've gotten his ~tragic past~. Or at least the normal parts of it.]

...Yeah, I dunno how often he talks about the girls, but. We've all known one another since we were dumb kids. They're my favorite people in every universe.

Are you going to be okay when you go home?

...Not really, nah.

[ STILL SUPER DEAD!!!!!!!!! ]

...And you're going to go back anyway, given the choice.

If John does, yeah. [ dave sort of shrugs. ] I kind of want to stay, but I have a duty to go back. And I don't want to leave his side. And I miss Rose and Jade and everyone else. And most of them aren't...well, but that's gonna get fixed and I...want to be there if I can be. I don't know? Like, I want both things at the same time sometimes, you know? It's...nice here, and I prefer it to being dead, but that ain't a reason to ditch destiny.

[... He wishes he didn't, but... Minato understands that perspective more than he might even want to admit to.

Sometimes, there's a greater good that has to be fought for, something greater than their own lives, and a destiny that can't be undermined.]

... I get it. A little, maybe.

[Besides... how could he ever tell Dave not to go back with John? To go find the people he loves? He can't.]

But... I really, really hope you find a way to make your "destiny" into something better. For all of you.

john egbert would be something if they can't fix it, and that's something dave just doesn't want to see. ]

I just wish I could help you guys more. You're important friends to me, you know?

I mean. You're important to me, too. And I know you're important to John.

[ the dude makes friends so easily. ]

Maybe we'll all figure out a way to help one another before we break out of this joint?

That'd be the best case scenario.

[A firm nod, and:]

I'm not going to ever give up on it either, okay? We'll find a way to help fix things...before you guys have to leave and go back to that.

...Yeah, okay. What all are you goin' back to, anyway?

[ hopefully it's better than dave and john's prize. ]

[... Ha. Well. Minato's quiet for a moment, staring at his own hands--and then he smiles a little.

He can't help it, though, because it's a little bittersweet.]

A pretty peaceful world, I hope. We fought really hard to make it happen, but there shouldn't be any more danger now.

... No, not necessarily. Just...maybe a question I don't have a good answer to, yet.

[That doesn't make the question bad, it just... means Minato hasn't really come to terms with the answer he has to give, not quite.]

Ask me again another time, maybe.

Sure thing, dude. There'll be time to talk, maybe...you realize we'll have known one another for like half a year in just a little while? Like. It's coming up on the horizon.

[Dave does get a small, grateful little smile at that--before Minato focuses on the rest, shaking his head.]

Six months, huh...? It's a little hard to believe, it's true. We've already been here a really long time, and I don't think we're going home any time soon.

Yeah...but, like. You know. I have to say that if I got to pick and choose who to be stuck here with - all of you would make the exclusive list. The hired bouncers would let you all in after looking up the names, you wouldn't get kicked to the curb. Even if maybe I should pick not you guys if I had the choice so you could go home? But you know what I mean.

That was very roundabout and rambly, but isn't that Dave in a nutshell? What really matters is--]

That's...very sweet, actually. I feel the same way about you, okay? And really, most everyone here. Even though I want to be able to get everyone here home who wants to go home... I'm glad I've gotten the chance to spend so much time with you here too.
